ABOUT ME

Ioannis is Professor at the ECE department of University of Patras. In the past he held a “Chair of Excellence Professor” (Cátedras de Excelencia) position at the University Carlos III (Madrid, Spain), an “Adjunct Professorship” at the College of Optical Sciences of University of Arizona, an “Adjunct Research Fellowship” at the ECE Department at University of Cyprus, an Adjunct Faculty position at the Information Networking Institute of Carnegie-Mellon University, USA, and a Senior Scientist position at Corning Inc. USA. He was/is involved in over 25 EU-funded R&D projects within which he served as Principal Investigator having a consortium-wide leading role. His most recent research interests relate with 5G network technologies and their use in smart networks. In 2018, Dr. Tomkos was elected a Fellow of IEEE “for contributions in Dynamic Optical Networks”. He is also a Fellow of the IET (2010) and a Fellow of the “Optical Society” (2012). Together with his colleagues and students he has authored over 600 peer-reviewed archival articles, including over 150 Journal/Magazine/Book publications. His published work has received over 9500 citations and his h-factor is 48.

Research Infrastructure
  • High-Speed Networks and Optical Communications Lab

The Lab hosts: (1) An advanced recirculating loop based transmission test-bed that supports up to 120ch DWDM transmission in the C-band and part of L-band over a variety of fibre types (SMF, LEAF, Truewave) with the corresponding DCF types, supporting single recirculating loop set-ups as well as dual-loop set-ups for emulating node add/drop switching functions; (2) a 4-node system test-bed with 8×8 optical switches and independent interfaces and control equipment per node; (3) FPGA based traffic generator and controller for up to 6 channels up to 12.5Gb/s and (4) test and measurement equipment for continues and burst mode operation including: 10Gbit/s BERT set, OSA, 40Gbit/s Communications analyser, up to 160Gb/s OTDM and 40Gb/s D(Q)PSK transceivers.
